Apoorv Chebolu, M.D.

Dr. Apoorv Chebolu is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship trained vitreoretinal surgeon at Virginia Retina Specialists.  He has undergone exceptional training and possesses extensive experience in managing a broad spectrum of ocular conditions. His expertise encompasses diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular diseases, secondary intraocular lenses, and complex surgical procedures.

 Dr. Chebolu completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia, earning a degree in Computer Engineering. He distinguished himself academically by receiving multiple scholarships and awards, being named to the Dean’s Honors List, and graduating with high distinction. He then pursued his Doctor of Medicine degree at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA. He also engaged in research through the NIH/NIDDK at Vanderbilt University.

 Following medical school, Dr. Chebolu completed his residency at Albany Medical Center, where he served as chief resident. His commitment to education and research was evident through his involvement in teaching junior residents and medical students, achieving multiple research awards, receipt of a competitive research grant, and presentations at national conferences. He was well liked by faculty and peers and was recognized with the Cetner Award and the Veterans Affairs Resident of the Year Award, honors given to outstanding ophthalmology residents.

Dr. Chebolu further advanced his training by completing a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at the prestigious Scheie Eye Institute, University of Pennsylvania. During this fellowship, he engaged in various research projects, contributing to several published journal articles and received accolades for his presentations, including the Best Fellow Case Presentation Award at the Atlantic Coast Retina Club. His experience extends to managing inherited retinal diseases and uveitis, as well as performing complex retinal surgeries, including diabetic retinal detachments, recurrent retinal detachments, and subretinal injections for gene therapy—a technique mastered by only a select few retina specialists. He was also honored with the Fellow Excellence in Teaching Award for his dedication and passion for resident education.

 

Dr. Chebolu is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is also a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists.

 Originally from Northern Virginia, Dr. Chebolu is enthusiastic about joining Virginia Retina Specialists and is committed to enhancing his patients’ ocular health. In his personal time, he enjoys spending time with family and friends and maintaining an active lifestyle.
