Kush Patel, M.D.
Dr. Kush Patel is a retina specialist and vitreoretinal surgeon at Virginia Retina Specialists. He specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of retinal and vitreous diseases. His clinical interests include the diagnosis and treatment of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular diseases, retinal detachments, epiretinal membranes, macular holes, and secondary intraocular lenses.
He attended Virginia Commonwealth University on a full academic scholarship and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a major in Biomedical Engineering and minors in Chemistry and Mathematics. He then went on to earn his medical degree from the Georgetown University School of Medicine, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and graduated with cum laude honors.
Dr. Patel completed his residency in Ophthalmology at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, serving as Chief Resident in his final year. He distinguished himself during residency and was chosen as the Outstanding Graduate for his class.
He subsequently pursued and completed a two-year fellowship in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery at NJRetina in New Brunswick, New Jersey. During his time in fellowship, Dr. Patel gained extensive experience performing complex retinal surgeries and had a particular interest in secondary intraocular lens implantation cases. He also was an active researcher, authoring several peer-reviewed articles, and serving as sub-investigator in various multi-center clinical trials.
Dr. Patel is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is also a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists.
As a native of Northern Virginia, Dr. Patel is excited to serve and care for the community in which he was raised. In his spare time, he enjoys reading and spending time outdoors playing soccer and basketball.
